I Think I Have TMJ Disorder…Is It Going To Heal On Its Own?

Posted at August 28th, 2009 by Natural Remedy / No Comments »

Question:
I think I have TMJ disorder…is it going to heal on its own? It doesn’t hurt very well but somewhat discomforting when I chew wide open or when I yawn and I can hear a slight popping. I suspect it started when I began working 12 hours night shift and chewing lots of gum recently.

Many doctors dont understand TMJ (Jaw) Pain and its relation to the whole body. Incredibly, but it makes sense, your whole muscular – skeletal system is linked as a whole. For example, your posture alone could cause TMJ (jaw) Pain and in other circumstances referred pain to your jaw may be caused by areas in your neck, back etc. So sometimes it is possible to “heal yourself” with simple exercises or resting your jaw, but sometimes it is more complex and you must see a specialist.

If you have true TMJ syndrome, it won’t “heal” itself, but gum chewing and grinding your teeth will make the joint more inflamed and it will make it hurt worse at times. It will get better if you stop chewing gum and eating chewy foods. Eat soft things for a few days and take some Advil or Aleve to help with the inflammation. Don’t chew on ice, and if you grind your teeth in your sleep, you may need a mouth guard. I would definitely talk to your doctor or dentist if it keeps up.

Has this condition been diagnosed? Is there any joint degeneration? Surgery for TMJ is usually a last resort. Here’s a few things you could try: 1) quit chewing gum. if your muscles are sore…that insnt helping. 2) reduce stress. Stress very often leads to clenching your jaw which is bad on your teeth and your jaw muscles. 3) anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drugs can sometimes help reduce jaw clenching. You could see your doctor about this. 4) get a night guard from your dentist. This protects your jaw and teeth at night when you sleep. Do not try a “do-it-yourself” mouthguard at home. The night guard made by your dentists will be carefully adjusted for your bite and often will releive tension from muscles. Might cost $200.
